Batik that had been existing through decades has once again regained importance. In this technique a pattern after being sketched on cotton is worked upon painstakingly. The parts of the design that are to resist a particular color are waxed and the cloth then dyed. It is dyed as many number of times as there are colors. Before the last dye, the cloth is crushed or scratched to give a crackle effect.

This image of the transcendental Buddha is visually very pleasant. He is seated in the lotus position, with his hands in the dhyana mudra. This was the position adopted by the Shakyamuni during the long meditation preceding his awakening. He is seated peacefully flanked by a lion and deers beneath, and by deers and swans above. These birds and animals reveal the compassionate basis of his character. His enlightened wisdom is directly associated with his goodness and kindness and with his unlimited mercy to all living things. This calm representation of Buddha speaks of the life of a man who was born as a prince and who gave it all up in search for inner peace.

A thought-provoking image that has the ability to reach our hearts.
