Preface

Indian music is one of the oldest systems of the world. Since an- cient times, the authors have contributed to the knowledge of music that has descended upon us in the form of written texts, manuscripts in many Indian languages plus oral traditions. In the late nineteenth cen- tury the British Government had introduced western education at school, college and university levels. But before it, some musicians had established music teaching institutions as early as 1871. After independence, central and state governments made efforts for educa- tion expausion and music as a subject got benefits. Today more than a hundred Indian universities impart music education at all levels.
