Expel the darkness with the ravishing beam that radiates from beautiful lamps and welcome positivity

Diya is fundamental in Hinduism since it means virtue, goodness, luck, and power. The presence of light means the absence of sin and detestable powers. As the Hindu festival, Diwali is celebrated on a new moon day when there is preeminent obscurity and darkness all over; devotees light a huge number of lights to eliminate the darkness. Lighting a lamp or a diya in Hindu homes is a normal custom, particularly during performing day-to-day Puja. Lighting the Diya ushers happiness and luck into the house. Lamps are additionally lit at nightfall in Puja Altar, close to the Tulsi plant at home which is an old custom. This is done to make a Divine defensive shield around the Vastu and all relatives, to be shielded from the negative energies that are more powerful during the dark evening time.

Diyas look wonderful when lit, it makes the spot look Divinely honored. The celebration of Diwali is made more special with the beauty of the diyas lining every corner of our homes.  In old times, when there was no power, the Diya was lit in homes of India as a wellspring of light and it was likewise lit in Pooja Altars at home. Fire is one of the 5 components and is thought of as unadulterated, along these lines, when Diyas are lit it decontaminates the energies by eliminating negative energies. The Oil in the light implies our pessimistic contemplations, negative feelings like voracity, envy, and so forth. The wick represents our inner self. The importance of lighting a lamp is to be in absolute acquiescence to the Divine/God and eliminate all our ego and cynicism.

Most Diyas are made of brass and the latter is known to attract positive energies which makes these Oil Lamps ideal for worship, gifting, and decor. The Lamps incorporate basic designs, Flowers, similar to Lotus, Rose and with Gods and Goddesses, as Kuber-Laxmi Lamp set, and so forth. Lamps when lit sanitizes the energies of the space.

FAQs

Q1. Which oil is the best for lighting lamps?

For Puja and other important religious events, there are a couple of Oils that are recommended according to the old Hindu texts and are utilized for lighting lamps or diyas at home, Puja Altar, or even at work. Each Oil has its own importance and advantages-

1) Desi Ghee - Pure Butter made from Cow's Milk

2) Sesame Oil - Commonly called Til Oil, derived from Sesame seeds.

3) Mustard Oil - Derived from Mustard seeds and called Sarson Oil.

4) Pancha Deepam Oil - It is an ideal mix of 5 sorts of Oil to draw out its mysterious characteristics. Cow Ghee, Mahua Oil, Castor Oil, Neem Oil, Sesame Oil, or Coconut Oil are mostly the types of oil that are mixed.

Q2. Why do we light diya in front of statues or sculptures of Gods and Goddesses?

Light represents wisdom and knowledge. The Lord represents the "knowledge principle" (Chaitanya), who is the source, enlivener, and illuminator of all information. Thus light is revered as the Lord himself. Lamps symbolize goodness, luck, and strength- the win of good over evil, light over darkness.  The presence of light means the non-presence of darkness, thus lighting a lamp in front of a God or Goddess depicts how they help us overcome the darkness.

Q3. How many diyas light in front of God?

According to Hindu mythology, it is thought that there are 13 diyas that one must light in his house to be blessed with good health and prosperity during Diwali and Dhanteras. One can light 1 lamp or 2 lamps as per the wish, but at least two threads/ wicks should be used. I believe that Pooja should not have any rules. So feel free to light as many lamps as one’s wish. But the more lamps, the more careful one should be. One can even pray without any diya. God is everywhere, diyas and flowers only help us create a pleasant environment for praying. The diya/ lamp should be pointed east or west, depending on one’s preference.

Q4. Which direction should we light the lamp?

The lamp should be lit either towards the east or towards the west. Welcome wealth into life, by keeping diyas facing north or northeast. To improve health, place diyas facing east. Diyas kept near water containers banish negativity, protect against diseases and increase wealth. Lighting a candle or lamp daily in the northeast direction would promote good health. The figurine is kept facing East, the person should sit on the right side facing North. Normally, while doing puja Deepak is kept on the right at any place and water, etc, are kept on the left as we sit facing Northeast i.e. godly position, so kindling Deepak to East or NE or SE as per Vastu is always good.
