The syllable Aum is the most sacred sound, the quintessence of every prayer, the path to union with the divine, the original sound from whence creation began. It is this symbol of Aum that occupies the centre space of the field of this prayer cloth. Around the prominently place Aum are smaller circles containing the similar syllable. They are all shaped like a sun with rays.

The border on all four sides has the head of Shiva's trident on the upper side. The inside contains the footprints, the conch, the sacred sprig and a lotus bud, all of which are auspicious symbols.

On the vertical borders are the images of Shiva's family in circular frames, depicting Shiva's consort Parvati and son Ganesha. Shiva is holding Ganesha in his arm and his other arm is around Parvati, presenting a picture of love and harmony. Parvati's hand gesture is similar to Ganesha's as both of them symbolize 'fear not' mudra (abhaya mudra). Both of them hold a lotus in their hand.

For Shaivites, this kind of a prayer cloth holds an important place as it presents Shiva in his benevolent avatar. He is also known to his devotees as 'Bholenath', meaning a simple god who listens to their prayers and grants them their desires without much ado. While worshipping his aniconic image i.e. the Shivalinga, if the devotee is wearing the iconic image prayer cloth, the communication becomes easier.
