A soft feminine number, fashioned from georgette. Dyed a pale lilac tint, it is sure to become your go-to saree for when you are confused about what to wear to casual luncheons or daytime pooja rituals. The translucent field of the saree, which makes for a seductive drape after the fashion of Indian Hindi cinema, is embroidered with the signature chikankari (‘kari’ is the Hindi suffix for ‘embroidery’) of Lucknow, a pulsating city in the heart of North India.

In fact, this delicate style of embroidery is practically endemic among the artisans of Lucknow. It is usually done in white gosammer-like thread from underneath the fabric in question, while the motifs that you see on the field of this saree have been made with multiple running stitches, each more miniscule than the last. The stitches in question comprise 36 different techniques, which makes each chikankari saree a wearable work of art. Zoom in on the paisleys and vines, especially along the endpiece, to appreciate the beauty of chikankari.
