On a universal black base, this amli shawl, embroidered in pastel, is the epitome of beauty. The design is evenly balanced and even though the pattern shows numerous flowers, leaves, fine stems and curving stalks, a sense of restraint is evident keeping the decoration well under control and not allowing it to overflow the boundary of good taste. Shades of pink, peach, yellow, green and brown are used but they reflect the natural colours of the flora. They are subdued and subtly blended to avoid garishness. The whole effect is flat and formalized. With so many different kinds of flowers, the artisan gets an opportunity to use different coloured silk threads. The outline with chain stitch and the inside with the fill-in stitch makes it very attractive. Besides other things, it gives it a wide choice of colours and outfits to go with it. It will look as graceful with a long western dress as it would with an Indian churidar-kurta. So go ahead and experiment with the same shawl and different dresses!
