The Third Panchen Lama Lobzang Palden Yeshe is considered one of the greatest scholars and teachers in the history of Tibetan Buddhism and is believed to have contributed a number of books on Tibetan Buddhism. He also took a lively interest in world affairs and played a very important role in the relationship between Tibet and China in the eighteenth century.

Here he is shown seated in the vajra-paryankasana on a lotus seat. His right hand makes the abhaya mudra and the left holds a book. He is adorned with the robes of a Tibetan monk. The borders of the garment are decorated with floral designs.

The Third Panchen Lama was born in the province of Tsang in 1738 AD. The divine child was recognized at an early age. He was enthroned as the Third Panchen Lama in 1741 and was given the name Lobzang Palden Yeshe. In 1744 he took his full novice monk's vows and received a religious coronation. In 1757 he took the Bhikshu vows of an ordained monk.

The Third Panchen Lama visited China in 1779 at the invitation of the Qianlong emperor. In 1780, while in Peking, he died an untimely death of smallpox. A beautiful small stupa was built on the grounds of the Yellow Temple in Peking to commemorate his death.

This description by Dr. Shailendra Kumar Verma, Ph.D. His doctorate thesis being on the "Emergence and Evolution of the Buddha Image (from its inception to 8th century A.D).
