The ritual performed for the bathing of the deities is known as “Abhishekam”. It is carried out in a vessel (Abhishek Patra) which comes in different sizes, shapes and designs. Abhishekam is considered a very important ceremony in Vedic culture and tradition because it is a devotional service rendered unto the Lord, which purifies our consciousness and pleases the Lord. Devotees also perform this ritual at home on a daily basis.
This Abhishek Patra is specially made in South India with brass, the land of rich culture, art and tradition. It is a simple tray with no design, yet looks very sharp and graceful. The purpose of the tray is to place the deities to be bathed with different ingredients such as holy water, sugar syrup, yogurt, honey, milk, rose water, and fruit juices. After being bathed, the deities are dressed and adorned with beautiful ornaments.
This is done along with the recitation of specific vedic hymns and chanting of the holy names of the deity being worshiped. The Abhishek Patra also has an outlet from where all the liquid ingredients are allowed to be poured down in a separate vessel in which they are mixed and the mixture is known as “Charanamrita” or “the elixir of life”. This Patra is suitable for two or three small deities to be worshiped together.
