The divine lord of Mount Kailash and the ruler of Kaashi, Bhagwan Shiva in this brass murti stands in the posture of a valiant warrior. A firmness is felt in the way Shiva holds his Trishul (trident), reminding us that he is the Destroyer, Mahakal- one who has gained victory over Kaal (both death and time).
The coils of Shiva are held tightly in a smooth top knot, embellished by the gorgeous crescent moon. Naga Raja (snake king) Vasuki wraps Shiva’s neck in his flowing coils, while another snake forms the armlet of Shiva. The mythical tears of Rudra- Rudraksha beads are used in rosaries that decorate Shiva’s neck, hands, and arm in multiple strings. Baaghcharm (tiger’s hide) is used as a garment, one part passing over Shiva’s right shoulder, while the rest of it covers his lower body as a skirt. A piece of cloth serves as Kayabandh (cloth around the waist) and a belt of Ghungroo (tinkles) on which a Shringa (small, curved trumpet-like ancient Indian instrument) is tied. In Shiva’s right hand, a damru (small drum) can be seen, with an engraved ‘Om’ on it, a hint to its origin when the Mahadev plays the damru.
