An appealing sculpture of the destroyer of the material world, Lord Shiva, who along with Lord Brahma (creator of the world) and Lord Vishnu (preserver of the universe) forms the divine triad known as Tridev. He is regarded as the predominating deity of ‘Tamo Guna’ (mode of ignorance), and therefore, destroys the ignorance within the conditioned beings of this material world. He is above the modes of material nature.
The ascetic yogi, Mahadev, stands gracefully on a multi-layered pedestal, with four arms, and wearing ‘Khadau’ on the lotus feet. A serpent is coiled around His waist with its head reaching the lower left hand of the Lord, that holds in it a scull cup. The upper hand holds a Trident (Trishul), the lower right hand holds the gesture of a yoga mudra (Dhyana mudra), and the upper right hand holds the ‘Dumroo’. Next to Lord Shiva are present His devotee and the sacred Bull, Nandi, who is inseparable from his dear Lord. The devotee is holding a pot with her two hands placed on her head as if carrying water in it for serving it to Mahadev.
Nandi, always absorbed in the remembrance of Shiva, is seated on his hind legs, while the rear legs are raised, and is concentrating upon the hand of the Lord. The black idol with its glorious and shining texture appears like a night sky full of stars, making everyone to uninterruptedly gaze upon its beauty.
