Here, Buddha is solid brass, depicted in a monastic robe leaving his right shoulder and breast bare. His curled hair is knotted on the top of his head and the ear lobes are long. Perfectly motionless, immersed in a deep state of meditation, he concentrates all his strength to receive the illumination (bodhi). So far he was assisted by the gods. But there were also contradictory forces that wanted to manifest themselves and act. In the world of desires there reigned Mara, sovereign of passions who represented all that Buddha aims to abolish. He attacks Buddha twice but is defeated. After violence, after persuasion comes temptation. He immediately calls his daughters who were the most beautiful in the world and enjoins them to go to the Buddha in order to tempt. Temptation fails and Buddha's right hand touches the earth, calling it to witness his victory over Mara, the evil one, who is trying to wean Gautam away from the path of truth. This attitude of touching the earth is called 'Bhumi sparsha'. In this hand pose, the right hand is placed over the right knee, all fingers down, touching the lotus seat below.
The oval lotus pedestal is stylized. Rising from the pedestal behind the Buddha is a dominating niche of vines and leaves, which encloses the peaceful, meditating Buddha.
