Small Brass Khodiyar Mata (Rare Goddesses of India)

$40

Khodiyar Mata, a legend in the Indian states of Gujrat and Rajasthan, was originally the daughter of the Naga king (ruler of the snake world) who took the form of a human in order to fulfill the wish of progeny for Mamaniya Gadhvi, a devotee of Shiva. During her time on earth, one of her siblings got bitten by a poisonous snake, Khodiyar Mata (then Janbai) took a journey to the Naglok in order to bring Amrita (a drink in Hindu mythology with life-restoring qualities). In her quest, Janbai got injured in her legs, leading to a limp in her walk, earning her the title of Khodiyar (khodi means limp) and Mata or mother for her selfless act.

This brass idol is the form in which Khodiyar Mata is worshipped by many clans of Gujrat and Rajasthan, riding on a crocodile, with a trident in her hand, signaling her devotees to be fearless with her hand gesture.
