The story of how Shiva cut off the head of his newborn child Ganesh only to replace it with an elephant head later is widely known. However, there is another myth explaining the elephant head of the young God of Wisdom.
According to this story, Shani, the planetary god whose gaze is considered destructive, on his visit to the Kailash, during the birthday festivities of Ganesh, cast a look at the child. Immediately the head of the baby boy fell off his body. In a bid to calm the grieving mother, Vishnu brought Ganesh back to life, by attaching the head of a baby elephant to his body.
In this brass Shiva Parivar murti, Shiva and Parvati cradle their child, gazing at him with affection. A smile is seen on the face of Ganesh, who is enjoying the love that is being showered on him. Shiva and Parvati seem relieved, content, and thankful for the revival of the apple of their eyes
