Sage Patanjali offered to the world with the greatest gift of yoga; he assimilated the diverse forms of yoga in a well defined system of Yoga Sutras and hence was named as the ‘Father of Yoga’. Apart from the yoga sutras, he also penned the Mahabhasya, a text on Sanskrit grammar and language and was entitled with an epithet, ‘Father of linguistics’. Patanjali is said to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu’s Adi Shesha (the holy serpent on whom he reclines in Yoga Nidra), symbolizing awareness.
This black marble statue highlights Patanjali’s iconic features in an accurate form. Its perfect chisels on the five hooded serpent and the thick stylized coils at the bottom enhance the beauteous aspect of this figurine. The sculptor has amazingly carved the serpent coils in smooth and soft turns, settled one above the other in appropriate layers. The tiny circular chisels on the serpent body enhance its uniqueness and the painstaking time of the sculptor to create such a masterpiece.
He is depicted in a meditative trance with the front hands joined together in anjali mudra as a gesture of offering and greeting those who have approached him seeking yoga and its truths; rear hands are held up holding a conch that embodies the energy of sound. Patanjali’s iconography is shown like that of a half human and half serpent, with the human torso emerging from the coils of the all powerful serpent that is awakening in the moment of creation.
How to clean and maintain marble statues?
Marble has been a preferred material for sculptors and artists for more than a thousand years. It is a rock that undergoes metamorphism which causes recrystallization of the original carbonate mineral grains. Marble comes in various colors, designs, and dimensions. Pure white marble is the most preferred type of marble for making sculptures and statues since time immemorial. White marble is especially used for sculpting stone monumental sculptures since ancient times. The natural shine and luster of the carbonate crystals of white marble give a lavish and beautiful appearance to the statue.
Marble stone statues are highly durable and can even withstand harsh weather conditions without getting corroded, therefore, they can be kept indoors or outdoors without getting damaged or weathered. Although these statues can last for many decades, their regular care and cleaning are essential to increase their longevity and beautiful appearance.
Marble statues need periodical cleaning to maintain their flawless look. However, harsh and deep cleaning can result in making the statue look dull. If your marble statue is withering away, it is recommended to take the help of a professional cleaner. Marble is a delicate material and therefore needs proper care.
