The Gangadhara legend traces the origin of the river Ganga to heaven. She had to be persuaded to descend to the earth to enable the ancestors of King Bhagiratha to ascend to heaven. She agreed to leave her celestial abode but somebody had to receive her fall, otherwise it would create havoc on earth. Shiva received her force in his matted hair and gently let her down.
This is the anthropomorphic sculptural representation of Ganga, replicated from the shrine doors during the reign of the Imperial Guptas. Seated in a posture called vama-lalitasana (where the left leg is folded and the right is dangling), riding the alligator, her mount. Attributes held in the hands portray her association with Lord Shiva. In the upper left hand she holds a kalash, carrying the primeval water. The Hindus believe that in the beginning, the universe was all water.
The water of river Ganga is believed to be pure and divine, having the power to cleanse the past and present sins of the devotees who have a dip in its holy waters and pray for deliverance from their sins.
