Lakshmi's shoulders support her four arms. Each of these hands is engaged in making a significant symbolic gesture:
The upper right hand holds a mirror, which signifies self-introspection.
The lower right hand makes the varada mudra - the gesture of giving, symbolizing Lakshmi's boon of eternal prosperity and abundance.
The upper left arm holds a vermilion pot. The vermilion is a sacred symbol of fertility and the exclusive prerogative of married women in India. No married woman will ever step out of the house without applying at least a trace of vermilion in the parting between her hair.
The lower left arm makes the Abhaya mudra, the gesture which grants the boon of fearlessness to her worshippers.
