Standing majestically on the platform which is embellished by the slain head of a water buffalo, this Mahabalipuram stone goddess Durga statue represents the “Mahishasur-Vijaya Durga” or “Vijaya-Durga” form of the Hindu mother goddess.
The use of black stone has added a mystical character to this goddess Durga statue, which is a divine visualization of the victorious Devi.
Goddess Durga wears a queenly crown and is adorned with beautiful ornaments that prettify her heavenly Roopa.
In her secondary hands, she holds a Chakra (discus) and a Shankha (conch) between her fingers modeled in the shape of scissors.
These ayudhas (weapons) are associated with Lord Vishnu, who is connected with the great goddess’s Yogmaya form, in his Sri Krishna incarnation, as her brother. The lower half of the icon is adorned with a pleasing dhoti whose fringes pleasingly hang from her sides, adding volume to this stone goddess Durga idol. Devi’s primary left hand is elegantly placed on her waist in the “Kati-Hasta” mudra (“Kati”- waist, “hasta”-hand) and her primary right hand is raised in the “Abhaya-mudra” (gesture of fearlessness).
