With wide eyebrows and stretched lips, the features of his scowling face are tight and precise. He has three bulging eyes.
His face is fierce, with an open mouth and bared fangs. He wears a crown composed of two intertwined serpents and four skulls, from which project four leaf-shaped projections. At the exact centre of the crown can be seen the image of Avalokiteshvara, representing that Mahakala is an emanation of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion.
Embracing his neck is a snake, whose upraised hood can be seen just below his chin. The outstanding nature of this piece is exemplified by the fact that the texture of the snake's skin can be seen sculpted in a thin line around the neck of Mahakala.
Masks such as these are never actually worn, but rather displayed or brought out during festivals and used as part of the ritual festivities.
