The ultimate bhakt and an embodiment of complete surrender, lord Hanuman tells us about unconditional faith and love, absence of ego and total surrender. He is the only god who was blessed by Sita to remain active in the earth plane till the end of the time cycle. This wooden statue of bhakt Hanuman depicts his infinite devotion and love for lord Rama and Sita, to whom he prayed as a Mother. He stands with his chest open where lord Rama and Sita and residing. Sculptor has very beautifully depicted this bond of Lord and his devotee by carving each and every expression and emotion in an accurate manner.
The pedestal is carved like that of a rock in multiple layers ornated with tiny grasses describing the beauty of flora. Lord Hanuman wears his short dhoti fitted with a floral kamarband and a designer stole having mesh pattern at the border. It is said that after Ram was crowned as the king of Ayodhya, Sita gifted Hanuman with a diamond necklace, but he threw it because he couldn’t find Ram in any of the diamonds; to prove his true devotion to Rama, he tore open his chest, the way shown here and lord Rama and Sita were found to be residing in his heart.
The precious jewels, long flower garland and the sun haloed stylized crown glorify Hanuman’s divine aura. Lord Hanuman is easily identified by his monkey face and a tail, which the sculptor has amazingly carved, showing his divine eyes, Vaishnava tilak on forehead, short length wavy hair and the realistically shaped mouth. Hanuman’s two major weapons are his gada (mace) that he holds in the left hand and his tail, which curves from behind his right shoulder.
How to care for Wood Statues?
Wood is extensively used in sculpting especially in countries like China, Germany, and Japan. One feature that makes the wood extremely suitable for making statues and sculptures is that it is light and can take very fine detail. It is easier for artists to work with wood than with other materials such as metal or stone. Both hardwoods, as well as softwood, are used for making sculptures. Wood is mainly used for indoor sculptures because it is not as durable as stone. Changes in weather cause wooden sculptures to split or be attacked by insects or fungus. The principal woods for making sculptures and statues are cedar, pine, walnut, oak, and mahogany. The most common technique that sculptors use to make sculptures out of wood is carving with a chisel and a mallet. Since wooden statues are prone to damage, fire, and rot, they require proper care and maintenance.
It is extremely important to preserve and protect wooden sculptures with proper care. A little carelessness and negligence can lead to their decay, resulting in losing all their beauty and strength. Therefore, a regular clean-up of the sculptures is a must to prolong their age and to maintain their shine and luster.
