Dedicated to the temple of Kothandaramar in Kanchipuram, belonging to the “Kodanda-Pani Rama” (Rama holding his Kodanda Dhanush or bow) form of the Lord, Chola King Parantaka I’s inscription remembers him as “Ayoddiperumal”. In the tradition of powerful Chola rulers, Rama is the supreme god and king, making him a popularly revered deity for the royal families.
The warrior-prince of Ayodhya, in whom beauty and valor are perfectly balanced appears in this marvelous bronze statue. The sculpting of his weapons also carries an exquisiteness, making the powerful bow and arrow appear alluring, as if infused by the sweetness of he who holds them.
The iconography of Rama focuses on his wide shoulders, supple yet powerful arms extending gracefully, and strongly muscled legs, making this Panchaloha a visual narration of the divine character of the most perfect being- Purushottama.
