Embodied Serenity: A Brass Statue of a Tirthankara

This exquisite brass statue captures the profound tranquility and spiritual essence of a Tirthankara, a spiritual teacher and ford-maker in Jainism. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the statue stands in the characteristic Kayotsarga pose, embodying detachment and inner stillness. The burnished brass, with its deep patina, speaks of an enduring legacy, hinting at the ages of devotion and contemplation that the Tirthankaras represent. The form is rendered with graceful simplicity, showcasing the purity of spirit over material form. The serene expression on the face, with its downcast eyes and gentle lips, invites introspection and peace. The curled hair atop the head, a common depiction, signifies the renunciation of worldly attachments. The subtle depiction of the navel and the outline of the private parts are rendered with a stylized, almost abstract quality, emphasizing the Tirthankara's transcendence of physical desires. This artistry transcends mere representation, aiming to evoke the divine within the viewer.

Guardians of the Path to Liberation

In Jain philosophy, Tirthankaras are divine beings who have achieved omniscience and liberated themselves from the cycle of birth and rebirth. They are the founders of the Jain religion, guiding humanity towards spiritual enlightenment and liberation (moksha). Each Tirthankara establishes a "tirtha," a holy ford, across the ocean of suffering, enabling others to cross over to the shore of salvation. Historically, there have been 24 Tirthankaras in each cosmic cycle, with Lord Rishabhanatha being the first and Lord Mahavira the last of the current era. The posture of Kayotsarga, as seen in this statue, is particularly significant. It symbolizes complete renunciation and indifference to the body, a key tenet of Jain practice. It is a posture of meditation and contemplation, where the individual stands in stillness, surrendering to the cosmic order. This depiction invites us to reflect on our own journey towards inner peace and detachment from the material world. The statue serves as a powerful reminder of the spiritual potential that lies within each soul, waiting to be awakened.

An Object of Devotion and Artistic Merit

This brass statue is more than just a religious icon; it is a testament to the rich artistic traditions of India. The intricate detailing on the pedestal, with its layered floral motifs and geometric patterns, showcases the skill of the artisans. The patina acquired over time adds a unique character to the piece, suggesting a history of reverence and contemplation. Whether intended for a personal shrine, a meditation space, or as a distinguished decorative piece, this Tirthankara statue radiates an aura of peace and spiritual depth, enriching any environment it graces. It is a beautiful representation of a profound spiritual tradition, offering a tangible connection to the timeless wisdom of the Tirthankaras.

How to keep a Brass statue well-maintained?

Brass statues are known and appreciated for their exquisite beauty and luster. The brilliant bright gold appearance of Brass makes it appropriate for casting aesthetic statues and sculptures. Brass is a metal alloy composed mainly of copper and zinc. This chemical composition makes brass a highly durable and corrosion-resistant material. Due to these properties, Brass statues and sculptures can be kept both indoors as well as outdoors. They also last for many decades without losing all their natural shine.

Brass statues can withstand even harsh weather conditions very well due to their corrosion-resistance properties. However, maintaining the luster and natural beauty of brass statues is essential if you want to prolong their life and appearance.

  • The best and simplest way to maintain a brass statue is to clean it at least twice a week using a soft cloth or cotton rag. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the surface. Dusting is especially important for outdoor statues since it is prone to dust accumulation much more than indoors.

  • To give a natural shine and luster to the statue, you may apply coconut or olive oil using cotton on every portion. You can use a toothbrush to get to the small crevices but do not be too harsh. This will make the brass statue appear fresh and new with a polished look.

  • In case you have a colored brass statue, you may apply mustard oil using a soft brush or clean cloth on the brass portion while for the colored portion of the statue, you may use coconut oil with a cotton cloth.

Brass idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are especially known for their intricate and detailed work of art. Nepalese sculptures are famous for small brass idols portraying Buddhist deities. These sculptures are beautified with gold gilding and inlay of precious or semi-precious stones. Religious brass statues can be kept at home altars. You can keep a decorative brass statue in your garden or roof to embellish the area and fill it with divinity.
