A Pauranic devata (deity from the Puranas), Lord Dhanvantari is Hinduism’s presiding deity over Ayurveda, India’s ancient healing system. In scripture, He finds mention in the Vishnu va Brahmanda Puranas; in history, as the King of Kashi (present-day Varanasi). The Dhanvantari murti that you see on this page captures the unassuming iconography of this Hindu devata.
This Dhanvantari murti has been sculpted from bronze, the medium of choice for elite South Indian sculptors of the traditional school. It bears every hallmark of traditional craftsmanship. Stateliness of form, and a regal bearing. A high crown that tapers like a templetop. Most importantly, the ornate, multi-tiered pedestal on which stands the deity.
On the face of Dhanvantari is a composure of joy and compassion. In His posterior hands, He bears symbols of Vaishnava significance; in the anterior right, the amrta-kalasha.
