... First Dalai Lama (1391-1474)
Green Tara sits in a posture of ease with right leg extended, signifying her readiness to spring into action. The left leg is folded in the contemplative position on the lotus pedestal, the two together thus symbolizing the integration of wisdom and art.
Her left hand, in the gesture of granting refuge holds the stem of a lotus that floats over her left shoulder as a symbol of purity and power. With her right hand she makes the boon-granting gesture.
She is adorned with numerous jewels and a thin scarf is wound round her thin waist. The upper part of her body is bare while the lower is draped in a clinging garment, incised with various vegetative motifs.
The three conch-like lines on the neck of Buddhist deities points to the conch-like sweetness of their voice.
This sculpture was crafted in Patan, the second largest town of Kathmandu Valley. Patan is well-known since ancient times for its superb metal castings, achieved by the lost-wax method.
