Devi Meenakshi of Madurai (patron deity) is the South Indian equivalent of the Devi Parvati of North Indian Hinduism and Bodhisattva Tara of Buddhism. She was the princess of the Pandya Kingdom of Madurai - eons ago, perhaps the 3rd or 4th century - and went to attain divinity. The murti of Her that you see on this captures the traditional iconography of Meenakshi of Madurai.
As the wife of Sundareshvara, as Shiva is known in the South, She is young and curvaceous, bounteous and fecund. Her feet are cradled by the pistil of a lotus-shaped plinth. She is possessed of four arms, each of which bears the same element and stance as Her iconography at Madurai.
This Meenakshi sculpture is made from pure brass, which explains the colour of deep molten gold. The way plinth and pillar and archway have been carved betray South Indian iconography as well as the unique regional workmanship.
