Hindus and Tantra Sadhakas (initiates) have exhausted themselves in understanding and defining the majesty of the dark mother, Kali.

She is ferocious beyond human conception and yet she is Maa, the mother who cradles the entire creation in her arms.

Destructive and maternal, unruly and auspicious, Uma (the wifely ideal) and Mahakali (She who is beyond time and death, thus remains when all is destroyed).

This beguiling paradox of Maa Kali is best expressed in her dark skin tone, gloomy as the night sky and nourishing as the rain-filled clouds.

Sculpted from a brilliantly lustrous Mahabalipuram stone, this goddess Kali statue is a convergence of the enigmatic beauty of Mother Kali.

The goddess is in a Chaturbhuja or four-armed form, holding her Trishula in an attacking manner in her right hand, and a skull cup in her left hand. In her secondary arms, Devi Kali carries a Paasha (noose) to bind the demons and negative forces, and a Damru (drum) with a serpent coiled around it, an emblem and aniconic presence of Shiva Mahakala with Mahakali, to whom these attributes belong. The Maa Kali stone statue depicts her in a majestic royal posture, with one leg placed on her lotus-patterned pedestal and the other dangling, placed on a petal emerging from the base.

Employing a pristine white shade over black, the artist has highlighted exquisite ornamentation and dhoti (lower body garment) of Goddess Kali, which beautifies her eternally youthful form. Devi’s head is adorned with an imposing conical crown, haloed by a fiery aureole that denotes “Chidagni”- the fire of consciousness that purifies mortal souls. Devi’s facial features are soft yet dramatic- the third eye, large eyes, slender nose, fuller lips, and two fangs protruding from her mouth are vicious yet aesthetically rich.

With the ethereal firey aura and her eyes that appear thoughtful, this black stone goddess Kali statue gives the impression of being in a perpetual dhyana (meditative state). Yet again as a paradox to her expressions which carry a mystical stillness, Devi has her foot grounded in the mortal realm, ready to descend on the calls of her children.
