Goddess Saraswati, the Hindu mother goddess who rules the realm of wisdom and learning is visualized as a graceful and bewitching young woman, the pull of whose physical beauty is no less than the charms of the arts over which she has the absolute mastery. Saraswati is the embodiment of perfection in every craft.
The goddess of wisdom stands on a round platform shaped like a reversed lotus in this handmade brass idol. Her long tresses are secured in a beautiful bun, the compactly tied hair strands depicted by incised lines across her head. Her heavy hairdo is secured by a jewelled tiara and hairpins studded with gems and knotted at the back. Maa Saraswati is adorned with heavenly ornaments- maangtika (jewelled ornament decorating the parting of her bun), karnphool (earrings in the shape of flowers), Kantha (short beaded necklace), armlets, bangles, and anklet. A gorgeous yashti (long necklace of gold and gems) with a peacock feather pendant falls over her plump breasts, which are held together by an embellished kuchabandha (breast belt), a distinctively Indian iconographical device used to convey the high stature of a Devi. In the lower part of her shapely waist, a girdle with strands of pearls and jewels adorns the goddess, elaborated with patterns similar to the insides of a lotus stem. A mynah bird sits on the secondary right hand of the goddess. The bird is seen as a symbol of the great goddesses- Parvati and Durga and included in the imagery of the mother-goddesses, especially in the Kashmir region. In her left hand at the back, Saraswati holds the palm-leaf manuscript of the Vedas. The Saraswati veena is held by the Devi in her primary hands, with both her hands playing with its strings.
