The Buddhist vajra may be represented with one to nine prongs, each loaded with a different symbolism. It is designed with a central shaft that is pointed at each end. The middle section here consists of two lotuses from which spring, at each end, four prongs of the dorje. Together with the projecting and pointed central shaft, each end thus becomes five pronged. The outside four prongs face inwards towards the central prong. Each of these outside prongs arise from the heads of makaras (mythical crocodiles), which face outwards. The mouths of the makaras are wide open and the prongs emanate from the mouth like tongues of flame.
The five upper prongs of the dorje represent the five Dhyani Buddhas: Vairochana, Akshobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitabha and Amoghasiddhi. The lower five prongs signify their respective female consorts (shaktis):. Lochana, Mamaki, Vajradhatvishvari, Pandara and Tara. Thus the total of ten prongs represent the union of the Dhyani Buddhas with their respective shaktis.
