Dhanvantari is the Hindu god of medicines and longevity and the originator of Ayurveda. He is the manifestation of Lord Vishnu and the physician of the gods. He arose from the ocean of milk at the time of churning, with a pot of ambrosia for immortality, in his hands.
This large statue of from Swamimalai (place in Tamil Nadu) stands on an inverted lotus, kept on a square shaped pedestal. He is shown with four hands, rear hands hold sankha (conch) and chakra, Vishnu’s emblems; front left hand holds the pot of immortality with nectar in it and right hand holds a leech, suggesting blood-letting or surgery. He wears a beautifully layered ankle length dhoti and crown like that of a South Indian temple with a flower shaped halo glorified at the back.
This statue’s largeness and the perfect composition are its eye catching features.
