Teak is the most popularly used form of wood for making sculptures as its solid marble base and rot resistant characteristic makes it long lasting and gives a natural appeal to the statue. This statue shown here is carved out by the best artisans from South India pertaining to its beautiful look and glossy lustre. Lord Dhanvantari is the physician of gods, both in vedas and puranas and is revered as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He arose from the Ocean of Milk during Samudra Manthan with the pot of amrita in his hand.
He stands here on a double lotus pedestal, carved in ravishing multi-layered petals and a mesh design on its platform. The most enchanting aspect in this sculpture is the jewelled attires that veils the lords’ body; garbed in a superbly designed ankle length dhoti and a multiple layered long kamarband that has its long ends hanging on either side, chiselled in traditional floral designs; jewelled lavishly in multiple necklaces, karnaphool, bracelets and anklets. The sculptor has carved each and every attribute of his body in perfect shape and curves.
Lord Dhanvantari is the father of Ayurveda and is depicted as a handsome individual with four hands holding shankha, chakra, jalauka (leech) and a pot containing amrita respectively. The large crown that glorifies his head is hewed in a distinctive style of a flower band in the front and a cylindrical shape at the top. Zoom in to appreciate the realistic expressions of his calming eyes, perfectly shaped nose and a soothing smile along with the Vaishnavite tilak on his forehead. Having this sculpture in your office or hotel reception will be an eye catching artefact of decoration.
How to care for Wood Statues?
Wood is extensively used in sculpting especially in countries like China, Germany, and Japan. One feature that makes the wood extremely suitable for making statues and sculptures is that it is light and can take very fine detail. It is easier for artists to work with wood than with other materials such as metal or stone. Both hardwoods, as well as softwood, are used for making sculptures. Wood is mainly used for indoor sculptures because it is not as durable as stone. Changes in weather cause wooden sculptures to split or be attacked by insects or fungus. The principal woods for making sculptures and statues are cedar, pine, walnut, oak, and mahogany. The most common technique that sculptors use to make sculptures out of wood is carving with a chisel and a mallet. Since wooden statues are prone to damage, fire, and rot, they require proper care and maintenance.
It is extremely important to preserve and protect wooden sculptures with proper care. A little carelessness and negligence can lead to their decay, resulting in losing all their beauty and strength. Therefore, a regular clean-up of the sculptures is a must to prolong their age and to maintain their shine and luster.
