Dancing Ganesha, Son Of Nataraja

$1885

A dancing Ganesha figure carved from a single block of jade. The characteristic green colour of the gemstone predominates the colour palette of the composition. The deity’s complexion is a colloidal green colour, His dhoti a deep turquoise overlain with dotted gold motif. The maroon-and-gold angavastram and the scarlet-coloured insides of His elephant ears are a welcome break from the monotone of the medium.

A complex murti, the son of Lord Shiva is caught in the midst of a traditional dance routine. In fact His stance is identical to that of the Nataraja, the all-annihilating, tandava-roopa of His father. In His chubby child’s form, the mudras in question look more adorable than they strike fear into the heart of the adharmee. In His posterior hands are bejewelled spears, the tips of which pierce into the turquoise-coloured halo behind His gold crown. The raised weapons frame a solemn face. A wise, determined gaze defines the eyes.

A gigantic mouse, the vahana of Lord Ganesha, lies at His feet. It is carved from the same stone and features an identical colloidal colour. Hints of red and gold throughout the composition serve to bring out the beauty of the natural colour of the stone. A relatively simple quadrilateral structure makes up the plinth. It is superimposed with images of a bowlful of golden laddoos flanked by a pair of mice.
