Abhishek Patra, also called Jal Patra, is the vessel that is used to carry out a very important ritual known as “Abhishekam”.
In this auspicious ceremony, the idols or deities of God are sprinkled and bathed with holy water, sugar syrup, honey, curd, clarified butter (Ghee), milk and fruit juices.
Abhishekam is one of the devotional services done unto the Lord to please Him and to develop selfless love and devotion for Him.
This Abhishek Patra is made of brass that gives it a smooth and shining appearance. Its tray is round in shape which makes it suitable for placing one small idol to be bathed. The deity is seated, bathed, dressed and ornamented on the tray and vedic hymns and mantras are chanted along. The tray also has a broad and small outlet for collecting all the liquid ingredients used in Abhishekam in a separate vessel.
The collected nectar is then mixed and because it is obtained from the Lotus feet of the Lord, it is called “Charanamrita”, which is distributed to the temple guests. It has a conical base that supports the plate. Although the Jal Patras come in different designs, this one is simple and its design is minimal, making it look elegant.
