The peacock, or Mayura, is revered in Indian literature, art, craft, and ceremonial practices. Mayurasandesa, a 16th-century poetry work by Uadaya, is a compilation of poems made on behalf of a loved one who has been separated from his spouse and requests the peacock to be his messenger. This lovely bronze lamp in Hoysala Art style with a center image of a peacock biting a branch represents development and prosperity, two characteristics connected with the peacock.
The only source of illumination in the sculpture is a lamp affixed to the peacock's neck. There is an inverted lotus at the bottom signifying the presence of wisdom. During festivals, this lamp is often burned in temples and is also utilized as a decorative object. Diya, an important ritualistic object is provided with the auspicious image of a peacock and made a medium to bring good luck and prosperity to a house.
