Innocent and divine, with his hand pointing to the sky and earth, the baby Buddha image in Buddhism is a powerful symbol of his greatness, which he proclaimed immediately after his birth at Lumbini. After being born, the illustrious son of Maya took seven steps in each direction and with his hand raised and other pointing downwards announced that He is the most revered being in all realms. This is one of the earliest episodes of Buddha realizing and claiming his enlightened destiny, which makes baby Buddha a significant icon.
This brass baby Buddha is a simple artwork, depicting the baby Siddhartha in a plain dhoti, with a visible cranial bump (symbol of innate wisdom) standing on a bloomed lotus which represents purity of wisdom. Notice the absence of elongated earlobes (a characteristic found in other Buddha statues), since the drooping earlobes suggest a later stage of his life when Siddhartha gave up his heavy and jeweled earrings, which caused the lobes to extend in the first place.
Though such minor details are beautifully captured by the maker, the statue is otherwise plain, devoid of any ornamentation, to let the message and profound proclamation of the baby Buddha reach his followers.
