Tortoise, commonly known as Kurma, is considered sacred in India. Lord Vishnu took the Kurma Avatar during the Sagar Manthan. The Kurma was to balance the Mount Mandara on its back to allow the shesh naag to be pulled from both sides and facilitate the churning of the ocean. This oil lamp with a three-wick oil basin attached to a stand and balanced on a tortoise is a tribute to Lord Vishnu’s Kurma avatar. These items are considered auspicious and are often placed at unique corners of the house to bring stability.
