The South Indian butter lamps are also known as Kathakali Lamps. They are traditionally used for lighting the stage set for the Kathakali performances. These lamps are also called Nila Vilakkus. They are columnar with no space for wicks. The cotton wicks are dipped in sesame oil or butter and allowed to sit on the corner of the oil basin. These lamps have a very simple design but hold a lot of cultural significance. They are made by craftsmen who maintained the craft for ages. A symbol of heritage and culture these lamps bring in the sacred energy of the divine into a space.
