The baala-deva (boy-deity) of the Hindu pantheon, seated on a round-topped peedhee (low stool found in Indian homes). Engraved with lotus petals, it is poised on a four-legged, thinly cast plinth with multiple sharp, angular edges. The whole ensemble - plinth, peedhee, and murti of the seated figure - are made from a solid cast.
This seated Ganesha murti borrows heavily from the aesthetics of the art of the Hoysala period in Karnataka. The chaturbhujadhari iconography; the solemn, expressive gaze; and the minimalistic yet chunky adornment. The molten gold colour and almost fluid sheen of the surface of this composition comes from the superior bronze make of this sculpture.
The sculptor’s attention to detail makes this Ganesha murti a must-buy. More than the iconographical perfection, there are the lifelike digits of hands and feet, the dynamism in the body language of the little mouse vahana, and such details as the engraved trunk cradling a laddoo and the trishoola tilaka indicative of divine paternity.
