This brass Gaja-Lakshmi statue brings to you one of the earliest depictions of the goddess of wealth and abundance. From Buddhism to Hinduism, this form of goddess Lakshmi is quite popular in literary and artistic modes of expression.
Goddess Lakshmi sits in padmasana (the lotus posture) on a blossomed lotus flower. Both her hands in the front are placed on her knees, in the Varada mudra (the gesture of giving boons). Her other two hands hold two lotuses, on which two elephants are standing. Elephant and Sri Lakshmi together are archaic symbols of the earth and water-filled clouds. Lakshmi is seen as an embodiment of mother earth, while the elephants are considered nimbus clouds. The abhisheka or consecration which is being performed in this brass image is an act symbolizing the fertility of the earth, resulting in material wealth and abundance- favors conferred by goddess Lakshmi.
