Dakshinamurti literally translates to the murti that faces South (‘dakshina’). For Lord Shiva, this epithet captures the divine as teacher. Dakshinamurti Shiva is the personification of knowledge; He is the original guru and authority of the shastras.
The murti that you see on this page captures the traditional Dakshinamurti iconography. Shiva is seated on a mound of rock. He is surrounded by the finest mortal gurus, who turn to Him and look up to Him in their quest for knowledge. They are all facing dakshina disha themselves. Beneath the foot of Shiva’s pendant leg is, of course, avidya-roopi Apasmara.
The most striking aspect of Dakshinamurit Shiva is the luxuriant canopy rising behind the seated figure. Carved in bronze, it is the colour of a waxy, molten gold and is sure to add divine glamour to the traditional Indian home or office.
