The timeless image of the laughing Buddha, carved from labradorite. A chubby monk of miniscule proportions. Clad in one long, loose garment, as is the norm with monks of the Buddhist order. Wound around the hips right below the protruding belly and cascading down the shoulders all the way till either wrist.
The mirthful expression on the face of this Buddha gives Him the popular epithet of laughing Buddha. It signifies the importance of good cheer and the ability to laugh at the illusions of life. In His laughter, the laughing Buddha resembles a child. And just like a child, He has minimal possessions, all of which could be accommodated in a makeshift backpack, and a staff to help Him traverse life’s pathways.
The medium from which this compact laughing Buddha has been carved is a feldspar mineral. Its iridescence lends an otherworldly quality to the subject. Despite the richly coloured texture and the colour-changing iridescence of the medium, there is great clarity of line and curve and feature implicit in the composition.
