While Sage Patanjali is popularly referred to as the founder of yoga, He had not as such ‘founded’ the discipline. Legend has it that He had traversed the length and breadth of the Indian subcontinent in the 2nd century and collated all the prevailing knowledge on yoga, the result of which great labour is the Yogasootras.
Sage Patanjali is immediately recognisable from His fusion anatomy. From the navel downwards, His is the body of a snake with tapering coils. It is symbolic of the kundalini lying at the base of the spine of man, a key concept of yoga practice. The rest of Him is a human male of superior proportions, with the hands in namaskaram mudra.
Sculpted from panchaloha, a five-iron bronze alloy unique to Swamimalai in India, this is a skilfully executed composition. The highly textured finish adds to the gravitas of the ancient Sage and the deep ochre colour finish adds to His aura.
