Goddess Saraswati, also known as Hansvahini, One Who Rides a Swan, is the great mother who bestows the benefits of Wisdom—both divine and earthly. She must grant her blessings in order for a student, artist, poet, or anybody else involved in creative endeavors to excel in her field. Maa Saraswati is perched atop a swan in Lalitasana, the regal and kingly attitude in this brass statue. Additionally, her ornaments represent the goddess Saraswati's regal demeanor. Swans in Hindu tradition are symbolic of sharp minds that can detect the difference between shallow and true knowledge. The association of the goddess Saraswati with the hamsa (Swan) highlights the notion that as one obtains knowledge through the generosity of Devi, she is able to differentiate between untrue and pure wisdom, and thus attains proximity to the divine truth.
