The little calf derives nourishment from the mother cow’s teats. It stands delicately on its newborn legs that have recently learnt to stand and walk, and suckles hungrily. The mother, ever-loving and -giving, turns her head towards her baby and licks it clean.
This bovine mother-and-child ensemble is made of pure bronze. The colour of pale, molten gold, it is a fine example of authentic South Indian sculpture. Besides the consummate details of the animals’ anatomy - such as eye and horn and hoof - particularly ornate engravings are to be found along the body of the box-plinth on which they stand.
The cow occupies pride of place in Indian culture. She is worthy of worship on account of her innocence and compassion, qualities that are indispensable to the divinely maternal. A gau-mata murti such as this would be a fine addition to the traditional Indian home.
