The ghanti is considered a sacred object and is used in Hindu rites. Each intricately made component of the handbell is said to represent a different deity. Sarasvati, the Goddess of Wisdom, is symbolized by the bell's mouth or clapper, Brahma by its face, Rudra by its belly, and Vasuki by its stem, while time is represented by the bell's entire body. The installation of a bull on top of the bell represents Lord Shiva's blessings on the ceremonial instrument.
