In the Saurashtra region of Gujrat, a curious form of the mother goddess is worshipped. The local legends tell that Meldi Mata was born as a young girl with the powers of Parvati, Durga, and other Devis in order to slay a demon who hid under the skin of a dead cow.
The hide of the dead animal was impure and Parvati, the embodiment of purity could not touch it. When an angry Parvati rubbed her hands together, a young girl of 5 years originated from the Mel (dirt) of her hands. Meldi Mata, as represented in this small brass murti has eight hands with different weapons and her vahana is a goat. The youthful face and small size of Meldi Mata signify her young age.
