Abhishek Patra is a utensil or vessel that is used for bathing the pious statues or idols of a God or Goddess with various ingredients.
This ritual is known as ‘Abhishekam’ and is considered a very important devotional service rendered unto the Lord to please Him. It purifies our consciousness and increases our love and devotion towards Him.
This Abhishek Patra is not ordinary, it is made of brass and engraved with Hoysala Art, which comes from the Southern region of India.
The body of the Patra is deigned in the shape of double-tier lotus pedestal, the top and bottom of which, are designed as lotus petals. The perfect finishing of the engravings, and shining and smooth surface of the Patra are eye-catching. The tray or plate is round in shape which makes it suitable for one or two deities to be worshiped simultaneously and daily.
The Abhishekam ceremony is done by offering various liquid ingredients to the deities such as holy water, yogurt, mil, honey, ghee, rose water and fruit juices. These liquids are then allowed to pass through the outlet designed on the tray to be collected in another vessel. The mixture thus obtained is called ‘the elixir of life’ and is distributed among the devotees. Note the molten gold color of the Patra that makes it so attractive.
