The Superfine Wooden Carved Shiva Family is a captivating and award-winning sculpture that beautifully depicts the harmonious and divine presence of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Kartikeya. Created by the talented artist Shri. S Sagayaraj from Vellore, this masterpiece showcases the artist's exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
The sculpture is divided into three parts, each depicting a significant aspect of the Shiva Family. The lower part portrays the Varahi avatar of Lord Vishnu, accompanied by Vasuki, the serpent. The middle part captures the dynamic and powerful forms of Lord Shiva performing the Tandava dance, symbolizing the cosmic rhythm and destruction.
The final part showcases a majestic throne, adorned with a Kirtimukha (glory face) motif, where the Shiva Parivar is seated. Lord Shiva sits with Goddess Parvati, while Lord Ganesha is depicted sitting on Lord Shiva's lap and Lord Kartikeya on Goddess Parvati's lap. The throne is embellished with intricate carvings, and the surrounding space is filled with the presence of Gandharvas, celestial musicians, adoring the divine family.
The sculpture also includes the presence of the Vahanas (transports) associated with each member of the Shiva Family. Lord Shiva is accompanied by Nandi, the bull, Goddess Parvati by a lion, Lord Ganesha by a Mushak (mouse), and Lord Kartikeya by a peacock. These Vahanas symbolize their respective energies and attributes.
The design of the sculpture is highly intricate and finely ornamented, showcasing the artist's skill in capturing the intricate details of plants, animals, and figures. The carvings are so lifelike that they create a sense of realism and dynamism within the artwork.
This sculpture represents the harmonious unity and divine bond within the Shiva Family, reflecting the philosophy of balance, devotion, and familial love. It serves as a visual reminder of the spiritual connection between each member of the family and their associated symbolism. The exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail make this wooden carving a true masterpiece and a testament to the artist's talent and dedication.
How to care for Wood Statues?
Wood is extensively used in sculpting especially in countries like China, Germany, and Japan. One feature that makes the wood extremely suitable for making statues and sculptures is that it is light and can take very fine detail. It is easier for artists to work with wood than with other materials such as metal or stone. Both hardwoods, as well as softwood, are used for making sculptures. Wood is mainly used for indoor sculptures because it is not as durable as stone. Changes in weather cause wooden sculptures to split or be attacked by insects or fungus. The principal woods for making sculptures and statues are cedar, pine, walnut, oak, and mahogany. The most common technique that sculptors use to make sculptures out of wood is carving with a chisel and a mallet. Since wooden statues are prone to damage, fire, and rot, they require proper care and maintenance.
It is extremely important to preserve and protect wooden sculptures with proper care. A little carelessness and negligence can lead to their decay, resulting in losing all their beauty and strength. Therefore, a regular clean-up of the sculptures is a must to prolong their age and to maintain their shine and luster.
