The dance represents Lord Shiva’s five activities (pañcakrtya), these are - srsti (overlooking, creation, evolution), sthiti (preservation, support), samhara (destruction, evolution), tirobhava (veiling, embodiment, illusion, and also, giving rest), anugraha (release, salvation, grace). These, separately considered, are the activities of the deities Brahma, Visnu, Rudra, Mahesvara and Sadasiva. This cosmic activity is the central motif of the dance.
Surrounded by a flaming aureole, Shiva's dance is a reminder of the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth. The Panchaloha alloy, a sacred five-metal alloy, imbues the sculpture with an ethereal aura, its golden luster and rich patina reflecting the divine light of Shiva's presence.
