The Sanskrit word Dakshinamurt means ‘one who is facing south’ and is an aspect of the guru of all types of wisdom, lord Shiva. He is known as the ultimate guru of wisdom, all things spiritual, yoga, music, dance as well as self-consciousness.
Lord Shiva in this position is depicted seated with his left leg resting on the right while his left leg crushing a demon, symbolic of ego.
His front right arm in the meditation mudra, pointing to optimum spirituality and holding ‘Damru’ with the cobra on it and fire in other hands. A tree stands upright behind him and below it worshippers praying to Dakshinamurthy.
