Interestingly, the Ganapati murti that you see on this page depicts the Lord seated on the back of His vahana. Because His vahana is but a tiny mouse, the artisan has blown it into ten times its natural size, with the skill of His hands and the imagination contained in His shraddha. This single-handedly makes this an unusual sculpture.
It is a longline wood-carved number. Straight-line silhouette. Lots of pastels that suit the organic wood medium, such as crimson and green. Against the roseate body of Ganesha, is layered a world of ochre, red, and green jewels. A canopy of green spreads out over His head, further on top of which is Kirtimukham.
The artisan has borrowed heavily from the ancient temple architecture of South India and, as such, has paid attention to minor iconographical detail. For example, the lotus-petal plinth beneath the feet of the vahan and the style of Ganesha’s crown.
