The union of supreme male and supreme female energies- Purusha and Prakriti, Ardhanarishwara is the pinnacle of perfection, an idealized vision of that which is at the core of the cosmos.
This bronze statue of Ardhanarishwara is sculpted with traditional iconography of the Chola period, depicting Shiva on the right, his leg graceful but firm, adorned by a bell, wearing tiger hide dhoti, waist belt, and Yajnopavita.
Parvati is his Vamangi (reside in Vama or left, a term for wife) in an accentuated Tribhanga pose, her body supple but slender.
The silken dhoti of Parvati is marvelously delineated, the softness of each fold captured realistically, giving the metal image a delicate appearance. The statue is sculpted in a rounded manner, with faultless details on the reverse, exemplifying the finesse of the sculptor. In the poised placement of the hands and the hint of a smile of the perfect face of Ardhanarishwara, a divine animation is visible, making this statue a gem from the treasures of Swamimalai bronzes.
